The Symbol of Purity and Elegance in Bengal“Garad Saree”

Read this in हिन्दी /বাংলা

When it comes to Bengali festivals, pujas, or auspicious occasions, the first saree that comes to mind is the ‘Garad’. This symbol of purity is not just a garment; it is a unique testament to Bengal’s long history of textile artistry and sanctity. In today’s episode of Vunavya’s ‘Textile Heritage’ series, we will explore the story behind Bengal’s traditional Garad saree and some easy ways to identify the authentic one.

Meaning and History of the Word ‘Garad’

The word ‘Garad’ originates from the word ‘Gaur’, which means white or pure. Since ancient times, the Murshidabad and Birbhum districts of Bengal have been famous for weaving Garad sarees. The most significant feature of this saree is its yarn. The silk yarn is woven in its natural color without any chemical dyeing. Once, the women of zamindar (landlord) and royal families specifically used this saree for worship and religious ceremonies.

Weaving Techniques and the Skill of Artisans

The process of weaving Garad is quite time-consuming and labor-intensive. The body of this saree is made from completely raw or ‘Kora’ silk. Usually, its body is off-white or cream-colored, and the border is deep red, maroon, or green. The weavers of Bengal weave this fine silk yarn on the loom with great care, preserving its purity and natural luster.

How to Identify an Authentic Garad Saree?

Nowadays, many mixed-yarn or machine-woven sarees are sold as Garad in the market. As a buyer, you should know some ways to identify an authentic handwoven Garad:

Color & Luster: The body of an authentic Garad is never pure, bright white. Its natural color is slightly cream or off-white. The silk has its own soft, glowing sheen, which is not overly shiny.

Touch & Texture: When new, an authentic Garad saree might feel slightly crisp or papery to the touch. However, it drapes beautifully around the body when worn and becomes much softer after a few dry washes.

Weight: Garad sarees are extremely lightweight, making them very comfortable to wear for long periods.

Border Weaving: If you look at the reverse side of the border of a pure handloom Garad, you can understand how intricate the weaving is. It is not as perfectly smooth as a machine-woven saree.

price & variety

1. Silk Garad (The Classic Garad) This is the most authentic version, woven from pure Mulberry Silk.

  • Features: Known for its pristine off-white or cream body and a simple, solid red border. It usually doesn’t have heavy motifs, maintaining a minimalist and sacred look.
  • Best For: Religious ceremonies and traditional rituals.

2. Tant Garad (Cotton Version) A budget-friendly alternative that mimics the classic Garad look using cotton threads.

  • Why it’s popular: It’s breathable and perfect for hot weather. Ideal for those who want the traditional look without the high cost of silk.
  • Price Range: Generally available between ₹500 and ₹1,200 in local area.

3. Tussar Garad Woven with Tussar Silk, giving the saree a natural golden-beige texture rather than pure white.

  • Features: It has a slightly grainy texture and is more durable. Often features small woven ‘buttis’ on the body.
  • Price Range: Usually priced between ₹3,500 and ₹7,000 in local area.

4. Banarasi Garad or Korial (Korial Garad) When the simplicity of Garad meets the grandeur of Banarasi weaving, it is called Korial.

  • Price Range: Depending on the zari quality and work, it ranges from ₹8,000 to ₹30,000+ in a local shop.
