When we hear the name Assam, the images of golden Muga or pristine white Paat silk immediately come to mind. However, the canvas of Assam’s textile industry is not limited to just these two colors. The various tribal communities living in the hills and plains of this state have their own distinct handloom traditions, which are unparalleled in their diversity of colors and geometric designs.

Today, in this blog by Vunavya, we will explore the unique weaving styles of three major tribes of Assam—the Bodo, Mising, and Karbi communities.
1. Bodo Textile: The Touch of Nature and ‘Dokhona’
The Bodo tribe is one of the largest and oldest indigenous communities in Assam. The traditional attire of Bodo women is called the ‘Dokhona’.
- Design & Features: The base of a Dokhona is usually a bright yellow color (which they call ‘Gwtham’). The main inspiration for Bodo weaving is nature. Motifs of ‘Mountains’ (Hajw Agor) or various ‘Flowers’ are meticulously woven into their fabrics. Additionally, the ‘Aronai’ (a traditional scarf) woven by them is famous across India as a symbol of honor.
- Estimated Price: An authentic handwoven cotton Dokhona and Aronai set generally costs between ₹1,500 and ₹4,000.

2. Mising Textile: Masterpieces of Geometric Design
The weavers of the Mising tribe, residing along the banks of the Brahmaputra River, are exceptionally skilled.
- Design & Features: The primary clothing for Mising women includes the ‘Ege’ (lower garment) and ‘Gaseng’ (upper garment). However, their most famous weave is the ‘Mirijim’, which is essentially a heavy shawl. The designs of the Mirijim feature a striking contrast of black, red, white, and yellow colors. Perfect geometric shapes, such as triangles and rhombuses, are the main attractions of their weaving.
- Estimated Price: Traditional handwoven Mirijim shawls by Mising weavers typically range from ₹2,000 to ₹4,500.

3. Karbi Weaves: The Elegance of Red and Black

The weaving style of the hill-dwelling Karbi tribe is highly vibrant and woven on their unique traditional looms.
- Design & Features: The traditional attire of Karbi women is called ‘Pini’ or ‘Pekok’. Their fabrics predominantly feature a beautiful dominance of red and black colors. Deep red stripes or geometric floral patterns are woven onto a black base, giving it a very royal and elegant appearance.
- Estimated Price: Sourced directly from Karbi weavers, a traditional Pini or Pekok set is usually priced between ₹1,200 and ₹3,500.
Bodo, Mising, or Karbi—these tribal weaves are not just garments; they are an invaluable treasure of India’s ancient artistry. Vunavya believes that bringing these traditional weaves to people across India is the best way to keep this heritage alive.
